What People Are Saying About Milestone Documentary Projects

“I am grateful we decided to do the book. Maggie St. Claire and Kent Miles were wonderful to work with. They are professional, able, creative and most fun. They made the task not only easy, but quite enjoyable. Through their interviews and Jim and my interactions, I believe Maggie and Kent were able to capture the essence of our partnership. It was a pleasure to remember people and events that were long-forgotten, thereby re-living to some degree the emotions of our years together. By talking through our experiences together, we were able to recall many things that we would not have remembered separately. Maggie is a great organizer and story-teller and Kent is a marvelous interviewer and photographer (and golfer). With their help, we have created a book of memories that are, to us, quite satisfying.”

"The value of this project for me, as the Executive Director, is to have documented evidence of the processes that took place in building this network...  The thing that most surprised me was the candor of each individual during the interview process.  It was a wake-up call for me to listen to the interviews as they took place.  It brought perspective to the fact that in most cases we had achieved what was intended:  give the users what they need, and let them have a voice in the process of designing and developing it.  Hearing it verbally, in person was awesome.

"The long-term benefit to UCAN is a printed version of the effort to build a telecommunications network.  This document can be used to showcase this effort to governing bodies, legislative committees, federal funding agencies and others what was accomplished.  In today’s climate, any effort with respect to telecommunications and multi-agency participation gains huge attention and respect.

"Working with Kent Miles and Maggie St Claire brought creditability to the process.  Both are professionals in the written word and documentary photography.  They bring credibility to the process of gathering the information and presenting it in a professional manner.  Had we done this in-house, it would have been simply another government report.  That was not what was desired.  UCAN needed professionals who had interviewed people, experience with written copy, and the ability to capture each individual’s personality photographically in order to make this a success."

We're pretty fired up about these photos of Ann's parents, Kent!  Very happy with the results.

We were privileged to work with Kent in early 2014 for a documentary exhibit at Art Access entitled:  Creative Differences, Celebrating 30 Years. He interviewed and photographed 18 people who have been pivotal in the long-time success of our organization, some of whom were reluctant to engage in the process. Kent is the perfect interviewer, however, because he asks interesting questions and then stays quiet while you explore and answer them.  He is also extremely good at putting people at ease while photographing them, even when they have a camera in their face.  Due to Kent's creativity, we had a spectacular exhibit, and every single participant was pleased with his or her portrait.  They are all beautiful images that invite the viewer to linger and ponder the "thousand words" that are hidden within.

What People Say About Personal Histories & Documentary Legacy Projects

"Just like people, each business has its own unique story -- the tale of how it went from an idea to a reality. You might not consider your company’s history something that your customers and potential customers would be interested in, but when written well, the account of how your company came into being can be an effective marketing tool on your website or in printed materials.”

The greatest honor or respect we can give to anyone—especially our parents—is listening to their stories. In my mind, the moon and stars must be in alignment if parents want to talk about their personal/family history at the same time their children want to listen.

It doesn’t happen often enough.

If you don’t recount your family history, it will be lost. Honor your own stories and tell them, too. The tales may not seem very important, but they are what binds families and makes each of us who we are.
